Mobile Payments Today: January's top reads

Image
January is that time of the year when we take a look back at the previous 12 months, while looking forward to what may come in a new year.  Mobile Payments Today helped get our readers started on that task this month with a profile about PayPal, which we named as the top influencer in the payments industry in 2017. Future of farming: How new technologies are transforming Alberta agriculture

Image
More than 1,000 farmers came out to the first day of a three-day Edmonton agriculture conference to learn about how new technologies can make their livelihoods more efficient. The FarmTech event at Northlands featured innovations such as Climate FieldView, a new digital agriculture software recently launched in Western Canada. It aims to help farmers make better decisions out in the field. "Farmers have to make 40 to 50 decisions every year on each individual field," said Denise Hockaday, the Canada business lead for the Climate Corporation, which is hosting the event. "You multiply that over many, many fields that they have — it's a ton of decisions and it's not always easy to be informed when you make those decisions," she added. "We are given the ability to visualize what's going on with the crop over the course of the season." That data can include diseases in their crops which might otherwise only be detected at the end

Customers will have the option of using Adyen on its site or going off-site to pay via PayPal.  PayPal shares plummeted 10 percent in extended trading on Wednesday, after longtime partner  eBay  said it's going with a new payments provider. EBay will start processing payments using PayPal rival Adyen. When customers check out, they will have the option to stay on eBay and use Adyen's services or leave the website and use PayPal. Adyen will also provide reduced costs for sellers and a simpler pricing structure. EBay and PayPal have also negotiated new terms through July 2023. This new deal does not extend the previous operating agreement, which would have expired in 2020. Though they were part of the same company for 13 years, eBay and PayPal were split into  independent standalone businesses in 2015 . EBay, which reported ea

Mark Zuckerberg: Facebook changes reduced time spent on site by 50 million hours a day in Q4

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Wednesday changes the company made to its service last quarter reduced time spent on the site by 50 million hours per day. Zuckerberg made the remarks as the company reported fourth-quarter sales that topped expectations. Facebook fourth-quarter earnings came in less than expected due to a huge increase in its tax bill caused by recent changes to U.S. tax law. Facebook  CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Wednesday that the changes the company made to its service last year reduced time spent on the site by 50 million hours per day, or 5 percent. "Already last quarter, we made changes to show fewer viral videos to make sure people's time is well spent. In total, we made changes that reduced time spent on Facebook by roughly 50 million hours every day. By focusing on meaningful connections, our community and business will be stronger over the long term," Zuckerberg  wrote. On a conference call with analysts, Zuckerberg said that figure re
